  • This activity was carried out in collaboration with the FDI Foundation, One Tree Planted and the San Sebastián de los Reyes City Council.
  • Microsoft, its ecosystem of partners and volunteers from the Amás Foundation planted 2,000 trees along the banks of the Jarama River on a very prosperous day.
  • San Sebastián de los Reyes, in Madrid, is one of the cities where one of the soon-to-open Microsoft Cloud Region data centers will be located.

Creating a positive impact on local communities is one of Microsoft’s main priorities and thanks to this, San Sebastián de los Reyes will be able to reforest the banks of the Jarama River as it passes through the outskirts of the city.

The Jarama River, which flows north–south through Madrid, intersects several urban centers and industrial and agricultural operations. The river is controlled by a network of dams/reservoirs and has experienced the effects of rapid extraction, which has hindered its natural flow and poor water quality.

This planting project, led by the Fundación para el Fomento del Desarrollo y la Integración (FDI), aims to revitalize the area, improve water quality, reduce carbon emissions, create a new green space for the city’s residents, and increase the biodiversity of the city. To promote diversity. Once the trees are established, an environmental education center will be built on the site to involve local schools.

The FDI Foundation is an NGO whose social objectives focus on the social-labour integration of people with disabilities and/or at risk of exclusion through education and sport, as well as a commitment to the environment.

On this occasion, more than 100 Microsoft volunteers were joined by 35 professionals from its ecosystem of partners and 54 people with disabilities from Fundación Amás – both as volunteers and as paid employees – creating a very rich inclusive environment during the tree planting demanded. These people also participated in the preparation of the land and materials and will do so in the maintenance of the trees planted.

«At Microsoft Spain we have been carrying out reforestation in the community of Madrid for two years, an activity that gives us particular comfort. Today’s planting in San Sebastián de los Reyes is another step forward, as it implies the implementation of continued cooperation in the city where one of our data centers in the cloud sector is located, which we will soon open in Spain.” he pointed Alberto Granados, President of Microsoft in Spain, “We want to be very proactive, listening to local communities, understanding their needs and helping where we can make the most impact.”

«It is very relevant for our city that a company like Microsoft – the tractor in technological innovation- has chosen us to set up one of its data centers. It represents an injection to stimulate our economy and establish links that will allow us to develop the areas that concern us today: environmental sustainability, one of the objectives of our great city. Explained Patricia Hernandez, Councilor for the Environment of the San Sebastián de los Reyes City Council.

“We are delighted with the experience. The collaboration between Microsoft volunteers, its partners and people with disabilities from Fundación Amás – who took care of part of the preparation and will also be involved in maintaining the trees planted – has been very enriching and marked the difference According to what Microsoft professionals and their partners told us »pointed to Jose Criado, director of Fundación FDI,

The project, funded by the Microsoft Data Center Community Development Team in Redmond and executed by the FDI Foundation, has been validated by planted a tree, an organization that, since its inception, has been dedicated to making it easier for both individuals and businesses to create a healthier climate, protect biodiversity, and aid in anti-deforestation efforts. Together with Microsoft, they coordinate environmental sustainability activities in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Latin America involving the company’s cloud regions.
